Is fre:ac an MP3 converter? Print
Wednesday, 01 October 2014 14:40

Q: Is fre:ac an MP3 converter?

A: Yes, in fact it's a general purpose audio converter supporting not only MP3, but many more audio formats.

fre:ac converts between MP3, MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, WAV and Bonk audio formats. The next major release, fre:ac v1.1, will add support for even more formats, including Apple Lossless, Opus, Speex and Monkey's Audio. Preview releases (snapshots) are available in the downloads section.

Q: How do I use the lameEnc.dll from RareWares?

A: The RareWares DLLs use the BladeEnc interface instead of LAME's own API. Rename the DLL to BladeEnc.dll and copy it to the freac/encoders directory. It will then show up as BladeEnc v3.99 (or whatever LAME version you installed).

Q: Can you add support for format XY?

A: I will not add any additional codecs in fre:ac v1.0.x releases.

fre:ac v1.1 will introduce a new component system which makes adding new codecs a lot easier. You can try the latest fre:ac development snapshot available in the downloads section. It already supports several aditional codecs, including Apple Lossless, Opus, Speex and Monkey's Audio.
